10 Years Ago Today

I don’t know about you, but I often listen to a current single and think back what the single would have done 10 years ago from the time I was listening to them. So, I decided to look back on the January 9th song from 1999. Does anyone remember what that hit was?

Many people may not remember, but starting on January 2nd (of 1999), R&B crooner Deborah Cox made it onto the charts with an amazing song called “Nobody’s Supposed To Be Here”. The single stayed on the chart with an amazingly 6 weeks  on the charts.

But what took Cox’s place? Whitney Houston’s “Heartbreak Hotel” featuring Faith Evans and Kelly Price. They ripped through the charts for 7 straight weeks.

Who knew that 10 years down the road, music would have changed so much?

First #1 Song of 2009

While a lot of the world was getting drunk on New Years Eve or watching the ball drop in Times Square, Beyonce was making her way up the Billboard Hot 100. Single Ladies (Put A Ring On It) was rated as the number 1 single of January 2009 even before the time hit midnight. Last week, Single Ladies was still rated as the most popular single with 11 weeks on the Billboard Hot 100 charts.

Beyonce better watch out because Lady Gaga feat. Colby O’Donnis  is holding at a steady number 2 spot with Just Dance with T.I.’s Live Your Life feat. Rihianna bring up the rear at a strong number 3.

Will Beyonce keep her throne at number 1 or will she be blind-sided by Lady Gaga or T.I.? Who knows.

Who will be big in 2009?

2008 was swept with musical acts such as Flo-Rida, Chris Brown, and T-Pain. But none of them hit big like none other than Louisiana native, Lil Wayne. “Tha Carter III” sold over 1,000,ooo copies it’s first opening week. With smash single “Lollipop” staying for 5 weeks at number 1 at the Billboard Hot 100, Lil’ Wayne was a force to be reckoned with.

But what does 2009 have in store for Mr. “Lollipop”? While he has a new album due to release with T-Pain (who he collaborated with and formed supergroup T-Wayne) and is part of the up-coming The Fast and the Furious (set due to release in April of ‘09), everyone doubts that he can recapture what 2008 did for him.

But will have the championship belt in 2009? Will boy group the Jonas Brothers finally overthrow teen queen Miley Cyrus? Will Rihanna finally get that major hit she’s been looking for since “Disturbia”? Will Adele’s “Chasing Pavements” finally hit #1?

Who knows! But let’s hope that 2009 will be just as big as 2008 in the world of music.
